THE PREFERENCE SURVEY RE ZIP CODE 53092 IS OUT!

SURVEY IS OUT -- RETURN DATE IS DECEMBER 5, 2011 -- NOT NOVEMBER 2

After some 18 months of discussion with the US POSTAL SYSTEM, I am informed by Mequon’s Mayor Curt Gielow that the USPS will soon be distributing a Preference Survey to all addressees in Zip Code 53092. This includes all residences and businesses in Mequon and Thiensville whose mailing address includes the 53092 Zip Code.

The Preference Survey will ask whether Mequon should be designated the ACTUAL CITY in the US POSTAL SYSTEM software for Zip Code 53092, replacing Thiensville which will be listed as the ACCEPTABLE CITY, replacing Mequon. Evidence has been presented to the USPS during these past 18 months, that many Mequon residences and businesses in Zip Code 53092 have designated by the computer zip codes in operation throughout the country as being located in Thiensville.

Not only is it a distracting receiving mail addressed to Thiensville, when you reside in Mequon, but, in some cases it has damaged businesses where the GPS directs customers and clients physically to Thiensville. The Internet ZIP Code Database defines Mequon as a community of 5,490 population with an average household income of $79,413 and Thiensville as a community of 22,532 population with an average household income of $245,700 -- all due to Mequon not being designated as the ACTUAL CITY in Zip Code 53092. This is NOT a vanity issue, but one of correcting the current designation which is damaging to Mequon’s businesses and residents as Mequon follows a growth plan for the future – to grow a vibrant community that will lower the residence to commercial property tax ratio.

There are a number of other issues for Mequon 53092 residents as well. One -- when ordering merchandise on-line, sellers often do not accept Mequon 53092 as a legitimate address. Another -- when the ZABA Internet Search Engine is used to locate friends and businesses in Mequon 53092, searchers will find that most Mequon 53092 residents and businesses are located in Thiensville.

With a population of 18,000+ in Mequon 53092 versus 3000+ in Thiensville 53092, it seemed logical that the USPS would institute the software change making Mequon the ACTUAL CITY of 53092. However, USPS rules and regulations required a Preference Survey of all addressees in Zip Code 53092 before making the change. To hasten the process, Mequon’s Common Council passed Resolution 3045 addressed to the USPS encouraging the conduct of the Preference Survey with all deliberate speed.

It must be noted, that if the Preference Survey results favor changing the Zip Code 53092 ACTUAL CITY to Mequon on USPS software, no one will experience any difference in their current mailing address. Over time as the many computer zip code programs in use amend Zip Code 53092 from Thiensville to Mequon, the issues covered above will be corrected. Further, the location of the local Post Office building in Thiensville will not change. In keeping with Mequon’s long-term cooperative partnership with Thiensville, a joint post office located in Thiensville is complementary to the Mequon-Thiensville (Weyenberg) Library and Mequon-Thiensville School District located in Mequon and the Mequon-Thiensville Chamber of Commerce located in Thiensville.

I am persuaded that it is entirely fair and reasonable for all recipients of the survey to indicate their preference for making Mequon the ACTUAL CITY for Zip Code 53092. I hope that survey addressees agree.
