A liberal friend of mine recently lamented the accusation that our president was dividing America. He called the charge "exasperating" and claimed it was supported by the "flimsiest of evidence." Ironically, his inability to see the truth is itself probative evidence of how divided America has become. Facilitated by desperate, baseless, yet effective accusations that those who oppose our president are racist, Barack Obama will go down in history as the most divisive chief executive ever to occupy the Oval Office. And the evidence is far from flimsy.
President Obama has talked for over four years about "leveling the playing field" and lowering taxes for “working” Americans. Who are these mysterious "working Americans"? Most small and large business owners who take the risks, create jobs, and constitute the engine of the U.S. economy, work longer and harder than 99% of the so-called "99%." Yet I can assure you our president is not referring to small business owners when he describes or mentions “working Americans." The reason is simple – he is dividing America into factions for political gain.
President Obama has effectively divided America into nice little political enclaves based on skin color, ethnicity, and race. He wrongfully attacked the white Cambridge police and announced publicly these hard-working police officers "acted stupidly" for going by the book and arresting the fly-off-the-handle black professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., solely based on the skin color of the participants and without even knowing the true facts. He was later proved wrong. More recently, Obama sided with Trayvon Martin in what has now been shown to be a justified use of deadly force by George Zimmerman, saying if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. Another example of dividing by race, fanning the flames, without justification or knowing any of the facts.
Amazingly, even liberal-CNN, which has lost 50% of its audience in the last 12 months, has turned on the president and has tagged him a “divider.” The network recently said that, in 2008, President Obama campaigned on a message of “Hope and Change”. They charged that his speeches have now become centerpieces of class warfare and that his 2012 re-election effort is a class warfare campaign of division. CNN correctly points out that Obama plans to divide America along class lines, gender lines, party lines, age lines and any other lines he can find. He will run a campaign of rich against poor, men against women, Democrats against Republicans, young against old and liberals against conservatives. And that is from a liberal news organization.
Obama is even dividing employees across America by insisting on fostering employee unions where none are wanted or needed. On the heels of a stinging defeat in Wisconsin and unable to reverse the freefall in union membership, Obama has circumvented Congress by allowing the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to create an entirely new type of union. A new rule hatched by the Obama-appointed board, ambushes employers by allowing the creation of union cells - organizing a few employees within a company to gain a foothold - which will severely impact businesses and further divides labor from management.
Despite the fact that the top 1% of taxpayers pay over 40% of all federal income taxes, the president pits tax bracket against tax bracket by repeating his longstanding call for the wealthy to pay "their fair share." Dividing America into the proverbial "haves and have-nots", he serves as a catalyst for envy and tells Americans worried about their jobs that the best way to help them isn't to get government out of the way of the people that employ them, but rather, to raise their bosses' taxes. Mitch Daniels summed it up best when he said, “No feature of the Obama presidency has been sadder than its constant efforts to divide us, to curry favor with some Americans by castigating others.”
Barack Obama repeatedly has said he wants to have Americans work together. But that apparently comes only after we are divided up, categorized and separated by race, ethnicity, and even religion. The evidence comes not from Rush Limbaugh or Fox News, but from Obama himself. His campaign divides people by skin color and into convenient political categories: African-Americans, Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders, Jewish Americans, Latinos, LGBT Americans, people of faith, veterans & military families, women and young Americans, and those who "cling to their guns or religion." In visiting Obama’s website, one will find a disturbing drop down menu titled "Groups" listing several categories that Obama believes should be isolated and pandered to in a way that is different from that of the general public.
Our president is using race, gender and religion to divide America for political gain. As soon as he became president we began to witness the sharpest partisan divide in history. A major new study by the Pew Research Center reveals that America's partisan divide has reached an historic high. The Center, which has tracked American values for the last 25 years, shows a shocking dissolution of bi-partisan agreement among Americans in areas such as the environment, immigration, and the social safety net. Political party has now become the single largest fissure in American society, with value gaps between Republicans and Democrats at an all-time high. The study reveals that Republicans' support for the social safety net has evaporated, Democrats have become more secular, and even independents are more divided than ever.
It is not just the right-wing media acknowledging that Barack is the Great Divider. Ultra-liberal CNBC recently called Obama "unpresidential" and "petulant", and confirmed that Obama is "dividing us." The co-founder of Home Depot sharply criticized Obama for promoting class warfare through his repeated attacks using terms like “fat cat” and his attacks on capitalism.
Our president has intentionally and successfully managed to divide our country more than at any time since the Civil War. If our president was a saboteur, trying to do everything in his power to destroy the U.S. economy, what would he do differently? Not much. And he is not only dividing people against other people, but also is turning people against the only things that provide productive employment in America – corporations. His attacks on oil companies, insurance companies, auto manufacturers, and Wall Street is now the stuff of legend.
Class warfare is being used as never before by this president. At a time when America desperately needs to come together, our own president is pitting us against one another in a myriad of specious and deceptive ways. Class warfare has already become a dominant theme in the 2012 race for the White House. Barack Obama's Occupy Wall Street crowd loves to talk about how evil the "1 percent" is. But it is more like the "20 percent" that employs the "80 percent." And the 20% are people that have worked extremely hard, risked everything, and have been fortunate enough to get some really good breaks in life. What's more, people flow in and out of and between the 20% and the 80%, and 51% of Americans pay absolutely no federal income taxes. So much for our president's call for everyone to have "skin in the game."
Sadly, the Great Divider is the same man who four years ago wooed so many with tired, specious bromides such as, "There are no red states or blue states, just the United States"? Remember when Obama declared that Americans had to pull together, because what united us was stronger than what divided us? Yeah, not so much.
The Great Divider's re-election campaign has been an exercise in fragmentation. He has carved up the electorate into winnable chunks. And he's appeasing those chunks of the electorate, one taxpayer-funded handout, buy-out, or tax credit at a time. The evidence is far from flimsy. It’s overwhelming.
None of this should be surprising, however. Biographer Sanford Horwitt has claimed that U.S. President Barack Obama was influenced by SaulAlinsky, a radical community organizer who produced less for this country than perhaps any able-bodied many in history. Obama taught Alinsky tactics and “Rules for Radicals” to leftist groups, and later followed in Alinsky's footsteps as a Chicago-based community organizer, fashioning his 2008 presidential campaign around these radical teachings. And what are these teachings? Alinsky taught our president to “Rub Raw the Sores of Social Discontent.”
On the eve of the 2008 election, two of our most famous elitist political journalists – Charlie Rose and Tom Brokaw – conversed about how little they actually knew about the man they were going to vote for. The conversation went like this:
ROSE: I don't know what Barack Obama's worldview is.
BROKAW: No, I don't, either.
ROSE: I don't know how he really sees where China is.
BROKAW: We don't know a lot about Barack Obama and the universe of is thinking about foreign policy.
ROSE: I don't really know. And do we know anything about the people who are advising him?
BROKAW: Yeah, it's an interesting question.
ROSE: He is principally known through his autobiography and through very aspirational (sic) speeches.
BROKAW: Two of them! I don't know what books he's read.
ROSE: What do we know about the heroes of Barack Obama?
BROKAW: There's a lot about him we don't know.
It's too bad America didn't take the time to get to know the man they elected in 2008. It's too bad we didn't have the backbone to properly vet the president before it was too late. Divisive ideas and rhetoric define our president and the radicals he has embraced his entire life. It's sad that we allowed this man to follow the radical playbook and failed ideas of his mentors, divide our once great nation in the process. But we know him now. And we will not make the same mistake in 2012.
