Craft Beer Conference

This past weekend the World Beer Cup was held in Chicago in conjunction with the 2010 craft brewers conference.  There were some winners here from the state in different categories.  They judged beer styles by 90 different style basis.  The winners will get the title for two years since the next World Beer Cup is not scheduled until 2012.

The 1st question  of my article today is to see how many of you would have guessed 90 as the number of styles to be judged?  The number of new beers and new breweries continue to multiply.  The brewers association in their state of the industry report state that craft beers are up 7% for 2009 vs. 2008.  In a very tough economy that number is surprising considering the overall beer industry was down for 2009.

Imagine gathering a group of three friends and reading 45 pre-chosen books.  This does not seem difficult, until you realize that you will be quizzed on these books in incredible detail.  Because these books are from a variety of genres, this is an awesome experience for grade-school children.

This undertaking is called "Battle of the Books" and Lumen Christi Catholic School offers it as an extracurricular activity for its 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.  After the students engage in competitons amongst their classmates, a winner is chosen at each grade level.  Each grade-level winner advances to a regional competition, where students from Lumen Christi compete against students from 13 other schools.

National Women's Health Week

Healthy Lifestyles

Health Department staff reminds you that Mother’s Day is May 9 and the start of National Women’s Health Week. This weeklong health observance empowers women to make their health a top priority. The theme is “It’s Your Time” which is meant to encourage women to take the simple steps for a longer, healthier, and happier life. Research has shown that when women take care of themselves, the health of their family improves.

Here are some simple steps women can take to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases:

  • Getting at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity, or a combination of both each week
  • Eating a nutritious diet
  • Visiting a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings
  • Avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and not wearing a seatbelt
  • Paying attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress
