Declare Your Beer Independence

Beer

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the National Craft Brewer's Conference in Boston.  It was a collection of brewers, beer wholesalers, brewery reps, beer writers beer product suppliers(wheat, hops, containers, yeast).  It was a great opportunity to be with other beer people to discuss the issues of the industry.

May 11-17 will be American Craft Beer Week, a national celebration highlighting the culture and contributions of craft beer.  Julia Herz ,spokesperson for the Brewers Association quotes:"Today, 97% of the more than 1,500 U.S. breweries are small and independent craft brewers.  American Craft Beer week is a time to celebrate everyting these breweries contribute to our country and culture, and to also celebrate the diversity of beer styles and brands availible today."

Can you feed baby birds this summer?

Volunteers are needed to help feed and care for orphaned wild birds in the wildlife nursery at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center from May through September. This is a great opportunity for individuals to learn about urban wildlife and help save the lives of baby animals.

Responsibilities include feeding baby birds, preparing food and cleaning cages.  Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to work without a guardian, or 12 years old with an adult guardian.  No previous animal handling experience is required.  The time commitment is one day per week for three hours.  Four different shifts are available between 8am and 9pm, seven days a week.  This is a great experience to help save local wildlife and build great relationships with other animal lovers! Upcoming orientations will be held on Sunday, May 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Orphans Danny and Annie

Danny Gokey isn’t the only Danny worthy of attention today!
The Ozaukee Humane Society, sister shelter of WHS, is beginning to see a lot of orphaned kittens – just in time for Mother’s Day, ironically. Read about the adorable orphans, Danny and Annie, who are currently being treated at the shelter. You can donate to help OHS cover the cost of not only their care, but the hundreds of other sick orphans they expect to see this season.  You can even give a donation in honor of your mom for Mother’s Day!  Click here for info.   OHS is located at 2073 Highway W in Grafton.  Call 262-377-7580 or go to www.ozaukeehumane.org for general adoption information.

TOO MUCH ASKED OF AMERICA

Cooking in Big Apple !

Well, well...what an amazing, challenging and thrilling experience it was for me to be able to present a cooking workshop at the famous James Beard Foundation (JBF), in Manhattan, New York. The JBF is a prestigious culinary organization that hosts workshops and events featuring culinary experts, prominent authors and chefs from around the country ( www.jamesbeard.org/events ). The JBF programs include classes, conferences, readings and other educational experiences that help people learn about and engage with food. Food matters a great deal to the members of this organization who not only pay an annual membership fee but also pay to participate in individual events held round the year.

I presented a workshop titled, "Enticing Indian Flavors" on Sunday April 26th , 2009 at 11 AM.

Hardest and saddest day of my career

The only thing remarkable about the two photos you see here is that they're both in focus. And I use an autofocus, so that's not saying much.
