America seems to have an obsession with awareness. As I drove down Washington Avenue in Cedarburg last week I observed a sign declaring October 21 to October 27 as National Massage Therapist Awareness Week. I must admit being a little nonplussed at first. I wasn’t quite sure whether, the next time I see a massage therapist, I should buy a Hallmark card or call the police. After all, October is also National Cyber Security Awareness Month. In as much as there is also an Alcohol Awareness Month (April) and an Eating Disorders Awareness Week (February 24 – March 1), and in light of the fact that the massage therapist is just down the street from Otto’s Beverage Center, I wondered if they are both aware of each other. It seems, however, that Massage Therapy Awareness Week is different from Oral Cancer Awareness Week (April 11 – 17) or National Headache Awareness Week (June 11 – 17), as I assume that massage therapy is a good thing and the others are bad – unless you are a married woman and it is important for your husband to be aware of your headache as you crawl into bed.

International Students Including Chinese Students Arrive at Concordia

We are now more than two months into the semester and things seem to be going well for the Chinese students from Xinjiang University who are studying at Concordia University. I've become friends with many of the students becuase they remember me from my summer trip to China. It's a great feeling to see the the faces of people I met months ago, thousands of miles away; it reinforces the notion of just how small our plant has become.

It was colder last Thursday in Port Huron, Michigan than it has been in more than seven decades. Daytona Beach, Florida set an all-time low temperature of 58°. Cold temperature records were broken this year in Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota and Colorado. Similar records were broken in the United Kingdom, Canada, Central Europe, France, and Italy. Here in Ozaukee County, August treated us to an evening of 46° along Lake Michigan, nearly breaking a record low set all the way back in 1892. All of this after global warming/anti-capitalists wrongly predicted – once again – more hurricanes, a loss of Antarctic ice, and record high temperatures. Geez, it’s gotta be embarrassing.

Best Local Hiking Trails

Brown Sign!"  Says Holly from the passenger seat of the rental car as she points to a big brown sign on the side of the freeway.  I crank on the steering of our rental car (a.k.a. go-cart) and barely make the exit.

When playing the Brown Sign Game you don't want to miss the sign your navigator points out!

This particular brown sign proved to be a worthwhile stop.  It had a few miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains.

Holly (my business partner) and I were in Colorado last week.  Most of our time was spent attending the week long Fitness Together conference but we did manage to find time to play in the mountains and get our workouts in.  Yes, we got our workouts in - EVERYDAY.

The best workouts were , without a doubt, done while playing the Brown Sign Game.  Brown signs mark recreation areas which are perfect for outdoor workouts.  3 of the 6 days in Colorado Holly and I went hiking or running at the brown sign stops.  It was absolutely breath-taking out there.  Snow capped mountains, colorful leaves, and crystal clear mountain springs.

You don't have to go all the way to Colorado to play the Brown Sign Game.  Right now, Wisconsin is beautiful with the fall colors.  So get out and do some hiking, trail running, biking, walking - anything - just get out there and enjoy the leaves before they're gone!

In case you don't want to drive around looking for brown signs we've compiled a short list of great hiking spots nearby:

Wisconsin Beer Tax

Last week in Madison the state assembly began hearings regarding Assembly Bill 287.  This bill would raise the tax on all beer produced in Wisconsin.  Wisconsin is a wonderfull location for new breweries and brewpubs to open.  The reason is the taxes on beer is lower than some other states.  This is one of the rare examples where Wisconsin is a lower tax state.  Wisconsin is also one of the top brewing states with the number of breweries and brewpubs.

Please contact your local representative and let them know this is a bad idea and to pursue other ideas for tax increases.  The sponsers of this bill are trying to leverage that increased taxes would go toward drunk driving initiatives.  The cause may be right but the use of taxes is not.  They also have left out the fact the Wisconsin ranks in the top 5 in the country with total tax impact of +40% of the cost of beer going to one tax or another.

How to Burn 15 Calories in Only 1 Minute

jump rope, , calories, burn calories, exercise, fitness, gym, health, weight-loss, workout

Hi Sabrina,

What is 7 feet tall, stick skinny, and when used correctly will have you burning 15 calories per minute?

I'll give you another hint - you can purchase one for roughly five bucks.  Still not sure?  How about this hint - professional athletes use it all the time.

Ok, ok I'll stop with the hints and just tell you what it is.  The too good to be true piece of cardio equipment I'm talking about is the one and only jump rope.

We use them in our studios all the time for quick bursts of cardio during personal training sessions.  We have one client who has taken jump roping to the next level.

He's our youngest client (only 13) and by far our best jumper!  We have a video of his amazing new routine posted on our facebook page.  Check it out at the following link:

Below are notes from his main trainer Tara:

"In just 4 months Jason went from looking at a jump rope to dominating it. This past summer he's gained a passion for jumping and it all started with the "jumping rope on a BOSU"  challenge (ask your trainer if you're interested in jumping on the  bandwagon). He's learned over a dozen tricks, while improving his speed and stamina. Even his mother noticed that he didn't get winded at all while playing soccer this fall, plus he's lost weight and grown taller!  Jason has truly motivated other clients as well as his trainer... I'm still working on getting 50 BOSU jumps in a row." - Tara C.

If you're looking for a little motivation to get your rear moving make sure you check out Jason's video.
