Fruits and Veggies Matter

Healthy Lifestyles, Nutrition

March is National Nutrition Month and this year’s theme is “Eat Right with Color”.  What a perfect time to make a commitment to add more colorful fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake! Do it for yourself and your whole family. The long term rewards are endless and you wouldn’t regret it.

Eating better today will help you stay healthy tomorrow. So be sure to fill half your plate with fruits and veggies and don’t forget to mix up the colors. Fruits and veggies are chock full of essential vitamins and nutrients and color can indicate which you are getting. Couple your fruits and veggies with an active lifestyle and you will be well on your way to a healthier, longer life. And who doesn’t want that?

My campaign for the 60th State Assembly District has been an education. I've knocked on hundreds of doors, and to hear the excuses and propaganda spewed by hate-filled Democrats regarding the fiscal mess our state is in – even to the point of denying we are in fiscal trouble and calling it a ploy by Governor Walker – has motivated me like nothing else could. I can't wait to get to Madison and go toe to toe with selfish public employee unions.

Deep Throat advised Bob Woodward to: "Follow the money" in his Watergate investigation. Good advice and appropriate in examining the current deadlock in Madison. It is money that drives the union position and with money comes power and with power, unions can dominate the political scene and achieve whatever goals they set. The unions have been following a brilliant strategy to oppose Governor Walker’s Budget Repair Bill, namely accept the financial conditions but oppose any modification of collective bargaining conditions.

The collective bargaining definition is the negotiation between employers and any group of employees, normally represented by a union, to determine conditions of employment. That definition was established by law in 1935 for the private sector but not the public sector. Public sector collective bargaining has never been established by law, but has been accepted by various units of government from local to state. It has never been adopted at the federal level.

A special needs Lab/Corgi dog is seeking a special home.

Meet Ben!
Ben is a very special dog looking for an equally special guardian.  We had a specialist examine the 1.5-year-old Labrador Retriever/Corgi mix because one of his front legs shows signs of lameness. The specialist said that he's not in any pain, but Ben could require surgery in the near future and further diagnostic tests are recommended. We want to find an adopter willing to make that commitment. Believe us, Ben is worth it! Check out his YouTube video and fall in love (or just stop by the Wisconsin Humane Society at 45th & Wisconsin to meet him!).

St Patty's Day

My favorite holiday is this week and I look forward in taking part.  St Patty's Day brings out the irish in everyone and this week will be no different.  What are your plans to celebrate?  Where will you enjoy the festivities and what food will you enjoy?  Let me know your favorite spots to celebrate and with whom you celebrate and I will put into a future post.

As for the beers to try, it is hard not to enjoy Guinness stout and their new to the US- Foreign Extra Stout.  This is the beer that is linked to Ireland and the Irish. Harp and Smithwicks are other irish beers to enjoy as well.  Murphys Stout is the only other imported stout that you may want to sample.  As for local craft beers to try take a look for Lakefront's Snake Chaser or New Glarus Coffee Stout.

Successful Season for 8th Grade Boys Basketball Team

The 8th grade boys basketball team at Lumen Christi Catholic School had a fantastic season!  They finished with a 21-4 overall record and were undefeated in the North Shore Catholic League for the 2nd year in a row.  The team received a bid to the Padre Serra Tournament and played very well, beating St. Sebastian and losing a close game to Northwest Catholic.  The boys should be very proud of their accomplishments both on and off the court during their Lumen Christi basketball experience over the past four years.

54 Puppies arrive at WHS

Last night's transfer couldn't have been cuter! We were delighted to welcome dozens of dogs and puppies to Milwaukee, all of whom will soon be in new loving homes. Three full-time veterinarians and several support staff aided in the surgeries.

The puppies and dogs will be available for adoption starting Saturday at both the Wisconsin and Ozaukee Humane Societies. The available animals pages at and are updated every 30 minutes, so bookmark them and share!

Safety is NO Accident: Live Injury Free

Healthy Lifestyles, Prevention

It is probably safe to say that every one of us has had some type of minor “accident” or injury in our lives! Remember the time we tripped and fell, cut our finger, or fell off our bike? We all do too much multi-tasking which makes it much more likely that an “accident” will happen. It only takes a few seconds to happen. But it also takes just a moment to protect against injuries and make communities safer.
