Brown Deer aims to curb prostitution with escort licenses

June 19, 2012

Brown Deer - The Village Board voted on Monday to approve an ordinance that would create a mandatory license for escort services in the village.

Many prostitutes, when found out by Brown Deer police, claim to be escorts, according to Police Chief Steve Rinzel.

"We've been finding advertisements online (saying) that they'll come to Brown Deer hotels," Rinzel said.

Prostitution charges would require testimony by those caught with the "escorts." Very few are willing to testify, Rinzel said. With an ordinance in place requiring an escort license, Brown Deer police will have a way to fine prostitutes who say they're only escorts.

"If somebody's going to make that claim, they would have to be licensed," Rinzel said.

The license itself costs $500, and violations of the license will cost $500 as well, which Rinzel said should help discourage prostitutes masquerading as escorts from advertising their services in Brown Deer.

"Once they see that someone has been charged," Rinzel said, "my guess is they'll stop advertising."
