Around the North Shore, only the Mequon-Thiensville, Shorewood and Brown Deer districts will have contested school board races in the April 1 general election.
A Feb. 18 primary will be necessary to knock out a candidate in the Shorewood board contest. In the Mequon-Thiensville and Brown Deer districts, three hopefuls will compete for two seats.
Brown Deer School Board — two seats, held by President Gary Williams and board member Dennis Griffin.
Board members serve three-year terms and earn $3,100 per year.
Update: Incumbents Williams and Griffin as well as Bill Weisgerber will run for the two seats. This is Weisgerber's second try for the board. He ran last spring but was defeated.
Mequon-Thiensville School Board — two seats, held by Suzette Urbashich and James Liska. Board members serve three-year terms and are unpaid.
Urbashich and Liska have filed their noncandidacy.
Update: Wendy Francour, Sid Terry, and Paul Buzzell will vie for the two open seats.
Fox Point-Bayside School Board — three seats, held by President Alice Lawton as well as members Tim Melchert and David Smulyan, who was appointed to an interim term in June after former board President Debbie Friberg resigned. Board members serve three-year terms and are not paid.
Lawton and Melchert are not seeking re-election. Their two open seats will both be regular three-year terms. Smulyan's seat will be a two-year term, because he has served a year of Friberg's term as an interim board member.
Update: Incumbent Smulyan and newcomer Dann Jacobson filed their candidacy by the deadline on Jan. 8. They will compete with any write-in candidates for the three available seats. The top two vote-getters will win the three-year terms and the third-place finisher will get the two-year term.
If no write-in candidates appear, Smulyan and Jacobson will win the three-year terms and the board will solicit applications for the two-year post and appoint an applicant.
Glendale-River Hills School Board — one seat, held by board member Bryan Kennedy. Board members serve three-year terms and are paid $540 annually.
Kennedy will run unopposed for re-election.
Maple Dale-Indian Hill School Board — two seats, held by President Mark Goldstein and member Robert Ricigliano. Board members serve three-year terms and are unpaid.
Goldstein and Ricigliano will not seek re-election.
Update: Newcomers Luis Arroyo and Stephen Largent will run for the two seats.
Nicolet School Board — two seats, held by board members Morton Grodsky and Joseph Kasle. Board members serve three-year terms and earn $1,000 annually.
Update: Grodsky and Kasle will run unopposed for re-election.
Shorewood School Board — two seats, held by board members Ruth Treisman and Paru Shah, who was appointed and later elected to an interim term in the spring to fill a vacancy left by former board member Michael Mishlove. Board members serve three-year terms and are paid $1,000 annually.
Update: A Feb. 18 primary will knock out one contestant in the five-candidate field, which comprises incumbents Triesman and Shah as well as newcomers Gregg Davis, Margaret Schmidt and Wendy Daniels-Rhodes.
Whitefish Bay School Board — two seats, held by board members Marie Greco and James Phillips. Board member serve three-year terms and earn $1,200 annually.
Greco and Phillips have filed their noncandidacy.
Update: Newcomers Jennifer Dragseth and Doug Armstrong will run for the two available seats.
