Bay announces spring Duke Pride award winners

Whitefish Bay High School has announced its spring athletic department award winners.

The Sportsman of the Year was Luke Davey while the Sportswoman of the Year was Megan Palmer.

Duke Pride award winners for character and leadership include Stuart Gilreath (boys track), Jack Larsen (boys tennis), Palmer (girls track), Maggie Tietjen (girls soccer), Dan Umland (boys golf) and Joanna Ruppa (girls softball).

Bay's Allen does well at state Special Olympics

Timothy Allen of Whitefish Bay won both the 50- and 100-meter freestyle swimming races in his division at the Special Olympics Wisconsin competition in Stevens Point, June 10-12.

Allen, 43, was also fourth as part of a 200 freestyle relay team. About 2,000 athletes took part in the annual event as Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk kicked off the event at an indoor dance and autograph session with a few words.

Outdoor events were hampered at the event due to rain, but everything was able to be contested except soccer for which the grounds were too muddy.

Special Olympics Wisconsin sponsors five state tournaments and 75 competitions each year that serve about 10,000 individuals with cognitive disabilities.
