Big games are par for the course in Nicolet's girls' basketball program. At Germantown, prime-time affairs are still a whole new animal. The difference in experience, execution and overall performance were all evident Friday night - especially early. The visiting Knights raced to a 25-10 lead after the first quarter, held a comfortable advantage most of the game and toppled the Warhawks.
Cedarburg 50, Germantown 37
Host Germantown, a team accustomed to sitting near the top of the league standings, cooled the hot Warhawks, 50-37, using stingy defense, solid ball control and excellent rebounding.
Menomonee Falls 27, Homestead 7
Menomonee Falls dominated No. 1 Homestead in all three phases and rolled to an impressive 27-7 win, ending the Highlanders' dream of back-to-back state titles.
WIAA cross country preview
A few days after former Homestead girls cross country coach Andrew Edington died during a morning run in April, his 11-year-old daughter, Bethany, summed up his sudden passing best. "Dad ran right into the arms of Jesus," she said. The Homestead girls feel that is where Edington remains as he continues to help them in various ways throughout this season, which wraps up Saturday at the Division 1 state meet in Wisconsin Rapids.
