Mequon Resident Earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast has awarded Mequon resident and Homestead High School sophomore Sarah Hilby the highest award in Girl Scouting–the Girl Scout Gold Award. This prestigious award symbolizes outstanding accomplishment in leadership development and community service.

Girl Scouts who receive this award have completed several project components and have taken action for approximately 65 to 80 hours to complete a project that makes a significant impact in her community and beyond. A Girl Scout who has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award immediately rises one rank in any of the U.S. military branches.

In an effort to help a low income community improve their educational surroundings and also provide resources for the families it serves, Hilby remodeled a room at the Urban Day School in Milwaukee, making it a parent resource room for preschool parents. She sewed closet curtains, collected parenting and adult fiction books for a mini library, and recruited others to help clean the room and create bulletin boards with inspirational quotes. She was also able to organize two parenting workshops with speakers, activities, and take-home games.

“The Girl Scout Gold Award carries responsibility along with honor. When a Girl Scout achieves this award, she also makes a lifetime commitment to being courageous, confident, and a person of character,” said council Interim CEO Carol Robinson.

This year, 16 young women earned their Girl Scout Gold Award and 127 earned their Girl Scout Silver Award.
