University School Teacher Awarded Kohl Fellowship
USM wishes to congratulate Middle School seventh-grade social studies teacher and grades 7-8 dean of students Brian Markwald who has recently received multiple awards. Markwald was chosen as a 2010 Kohl Fellowship recipient for his great work in teaching economics to the seventh grade. The award is sponsored by the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation which recognizes and supports teaching excellence and innovation in the state of Wisconsin. All of the recipients were recognized at a luncheon on March 21. Annually, the Foundation awards 100 Wisconsin teachers with $1,000 Kohl Fellowship grants, and each Kohl Fellowship recipient's school receives a matching $1,000 grant.
Markwald also has been selected as a scholarship winner to attend the Fifteenth Annual War College of the Seven Years' War at Fort Ticonderoga in New York from May 21-23. Since 1996, the War College has become a top venue for historians on subjects relating to the French and Indian War, drawing speakers and participants from across North America. The War College offers a unique, informal setting that promotes interaction between attendees and speakers, including both established and new scholars studying the French and Indian War in North America.
